Latvian Olympic Team Outfits

Knitting finds its place within the Latvian Olympic Team outfits.
In the spirit of the International Year of the Scarf, I had to show you the scarf design for the Latvian Olympic Team, as well as the rest of their outfits.

Incorporating the colours of the Latvian flag, dark red and white, you can also see the prominence given to one of the distinctive Latvian folkloric motifs, front and centre.

They have also been incorporated into the design of the sweaters worn by the Latvian Team.

Don't these designs just make you want to gather together some complementary and contrasting colours of yarn, pick up your needles, and work some stranded knitting designs?
Don't know where to start? Well, a good place would be the book Latvian Mittens by Lizbeth Upitis.

In English (and Latvian), it is an excellent introduction into the tradition of Latvian mittens. But who says you have to restrict yourself to mittens? These beautiful motifs can be used in many other garments. Use them in your own creative way.
