Demos at Halifax WWKIP Day

Saturday, 14 June 2008 is World Wide Knit in Public Day.

In Halifax, knitters will be meeting on the grounds of Public Library on Spring Garden Road to participate in all kinds of events: a scavenger hunt, raffles, charity knitting, yarn swaps, and just plain knitting in plain view.

I'll be there, too. I will have a table set up with some on my designs on display. You will have a chance to take a look at my patterns and try on some of the garments, too. Then if you want to purchase any of the patterns, it's a short hop-skip-and-jump to the Loop Craft Cafe on Barrington Street where you can get yourselves completely outfitted.

I will be giving three short demos on a few techniques that are handy to have in your knitting repertoire.

2:15 PM: I-Cord

Learn how to make your own embellishments with I-Cord. This fascinating technique has many applications  and can even stand on its own as knitted jewellery.

Bring some yarn (some colourful handpainted yarn is the most fun) and a pair of double-pointed needles.

And I'll show you the rest.

3:00 PM: Elongated Stitches
Lacy effects can be achieved very easily by elongating your stitches.
Doing this in a strategic way throughout your knitting creates visual interest and drama.

We'll take a look at the first basic variation of these stitches and learn how to "wrap and drop" stitches to best effect. Bring some yarn and a pair of needles and we'll practice this technique together.

Here you can see how elongated stitches in Open Waters enhance the look of a simple wrap by creating an openwork pattern.

4:00 PM: Continental Knitting
If you have wondered what all the controversy is about Continental Knitting, come and see how it is done.

This efficient and compact style of knitting uses economy of movement and can be very fast. It is particularly useful to know when carrying two or more yarns for fair-isle knitting.

Bring yarn and needles and I'll get you started on this style of knitting.

See you on Saturday and Happy Knitting in Public!
