Fana Cardigan of Norway

fana_cardigan_400
The Norway scarf takes its inspiration in part from the Fana cardigan.

Originating from Fana, just south of Bergen, it was traditionally part of a man's costume, meant to be worn as an undershirt. It evolved into a cardigan around 1900.

Typically the Fana sweater was knit in fine wool yarn in its natural, undyed colours. Hence the neutral colouration of the Norway scarf which takes its simple, geometric motifs and stripes from the Fana cardigan.

Contemporary versions of the Fana design now incorporate vivid colours. Versions can be seen knitted in red and white or blue and white.

Some even combine a variety of colours.

When you knit your Norway, you can choose to stay traditional or add the colours of your own choosing.

The Norway scarf is the first offering of the International Year of the Scarf (IYS). Early in January, Club members received the Norway scarf pattern, together with two instructional tutorials and an e-newletter with additional background information.
