France Scarf

For this month, it's back to Europe with the France Scarf and the International Year of the Scarf Club.
The inspiraion behind this scarf is French cuisine, in particular, the French pastry known as brioche.

Every time I work with the Brioche Stitch in knitting, I can't help thinking about France, its fabulous cuisine (made popular in the US by Julia Child), and the brioche pastry. Both are light and airy, while at the same time, rich and delicious. And like the pastry, the Brioche Stitch has just as many variations--which is to say, endless.
The Brioche Stitch has a fascinating feature which gives the knitted work a two-sided effect--without having to knit the two sides separately. This feature allows for different colours to appear on each side. The colours from one side show through to the other side as alluring shawows.

The France Scarf can also be worn as a poncho, by taking one short end and tying it or sewing it along the long end. I used a shoe lace to do this. Its sharp tip made it easy to insert and also to remove, if I choose to wear it as a scarf again.

The France Scarf is also suitable for men and for children, too, if you make it smaller.

I have chosen to work the France Scarf using one colour for one side and a series of different coloured stripes for the other sides. But you can vary it in any way you like: a different solid colour on each side or different stripes--of different widths-- on both sides. This is a template for a scarf that will be uniquely yours.

To all my American knitting friends: Happy Thanksgiving!
