Kenya Cowl

The December pattern for the International Year of the Scarf Club is the Kenya cowl.
It is hard to believe that the year is coming to an end and that this is the final scarf pattern for the club. It has been a fascinating, wonderful journey for me. I learned so much doing the research for each of the countries represented and trying to reflect each of their unique cultures and character.

I deliberately saved the Kenya cowl pattern for last for a number of reasons. For one thing, a neck warmer is just the thing as the weather gets colder and winter advances. Choose a plush yarn, perhaps something with a bit of mohair in it, and it will be particularly warm.
The Kenya cowl is an easy pattern to complete and makes for last-minute gift knitting. You can make one in a couple of evenings. The stitch pattern is an easy combination of eyelet rows and rows with wrapped stitches, all against a background of Garter and Stockinette Stitch.
The varying stitch pattern works particularly well with a handpainted yarn. The one I used was Fleece Artist's Woolie Silk 3-Ply in the colour "Bronze".

The cowl is worked from the neck down and can be adjusted for length, depending on the amount of yarn--and time--available. The pattern includes directions in how to extend the piece further over the shoulders, making it into more of a capelet.
Enjoy the final rounds of your holiday gift knitting!
