La Strada in My Living Room

Last week we received an unexpected gift: La Strada performing live in our livingroom!

The evening had been an instance of where something originally perceived as negative turned into something positive.

It came about almost by accident. The band was stranded in Halifax for a night, stalled by bad weather and a van that wouldn't start. They had just returned from their gig in Newfoundland and had been hoping to pick up their van and continue on their way home to Brooklyn.

They turned up at my door, looking for the key to my daughter's place where they could crash for the night. With my daughter out of town, I knew that there would be no food in the place. So I invited them for dinner. A quickly cobbled together a meal of whatever leftovers we had in the house.

These wonderful young men proceeded to enjoy whatever was placed before them--and we had a lovely evening of enjoying food and conversation. Since I was not the one to let them in, I had not seen them arrive with their instruments. So I had not expected what was to follow. That La Strada had been willing to sing for their supper.

What a amazing recital they gave! La Strada is an indie rock band that deserves all they attention they have been getting. Their sound is rich and vibrant, emotional and energetic. They have different styles. Some of their work sounds like "world music", some of it haunting and romantic, some of it fast-moving and joyous. Very danceable. All of it filled with soul.

When they all sang together with their delicious harmonies, the house was filled with the most beautiful vibrations.

Here is Daniel , playing his mellow violin.

And Devon, Ted, and James in a more contemplative trio.

Thanks, guys!

My mother declared La Strada "better than the Rolling Stones"!
