Lars Bolander’s Scandinavian Design

I have been out of commission for over a week with what has been now confirmed as food poisoning. As I was spending more time in bed than out of it, what do you suppose I did with all that time? What else? Reading about Scandinavian design.
It so happened that I had a copy of Lars Bolander's Scandinavian Design on hand. And it has been a calming and sustaining experience to dip into this remarkable book about all things Scandinavian.

Even a traditional interior like this one is balanced and comforting. Everything has its place and serves for everyday life.
Swedish interior designer Lars Bolander teamed with design writer Heather Smith MacIsaac to create this stunning work that spans the historical to the contemporary in all that comprises the recognizable Scandinavian aesthetic.
I have always been drawn to Scandinavian design. I can't say exactly which elements are those that attract. It may have something to do with the clean, elegant lines:

Or the constant awareness of nature--with the seamless blending of the inside with the outisde:

The restraint. Even the formal is underplayed. No need for ostentation.

One of the constants seems to be the ongoing connection to nature. Scandinavian homes respond to the harsh landscapes in which they are situated, where winter is a more constant presence than summer.
There is room for the fanciful, too, though:

And pure decoration wherever the opportunity occurs:

There are so many spectacular images in this book: from indiviudal pieces of furniture to textiles to different rooms to architectural settings.
Inspiration on every page.
