Rhinemaiden

The third pattern in the Opera Season II Collection has just been released: Rhinemaiden.

Based on Richard Wagner's opera, Das Rheingold, this fluid cape recalls the three Rhinemaidens who, in the beginning of the opera, guard the precious and mythic gold which is hidden in the Rhine River. Because of their beauty and melodious singing, these mermaid-like creatures are also cast into the role of temptresses.

The Rhinemaiden cape is worked in the round from the bottom up in a fingering weight yarn (shown here in Lucy Neatby's Celestial Merino, colours "Light Olive" and "Natural"). The lacy stitch pattern creates an undulating line which is accented by the use of a contrast colour along the top and bottom borders.

Decreases are made along a central spine. This causes the back section to be longer, giving the whole piece an interesting shape.

It can be worn with the central spine along one shoulder, giving the cape an asymmetrical look.

Rhinemaiden is made to a generous size, meant to cover the shoulders and arms. So it makes for an elegant cover-up for evening wear. The pattern is given in three sizes: Extra Small/Small, Medium/Large, and 1X-3X.

Yarn kits are available in a lovely assortment of colours. Although this design could be worked in a variegated colourway, I recommend a solid colour to show up the stitch pattern.

Which colour will you choose?
