The Smooth Against the Rough

The smooth against the rough.

The brightly coloured against the muted neutrals.
How is it that it takes the one to bring out the beauty of the other?
Seeing this image also reminds me--yet again--of Alabama Chanin's leaf motifs:

I particualrly love the seeming randomness of the leafy shapes. Makes me want to play with some of the common leaf stitch patterns in knitting. Move them around. Scatter them across the surface of the fabric. Achieve an effect that is closer to the reality of leaves in nature.
