The Market Shawl at Mary’s Yarns

Every once in a while a yarn shop sends me a photo of one of their samples worked up for the shop. Here is Mary's Yarns' version of At the Market.
I wanted to show you this version because it is very different from the original--and very beautiful. Worked in a pale grey wool (Smart by SandnesGarn), it is quietly elegant. Because it is done is a light solid colour, it shows the stitch pattern off to perfection, too.

This shawl is a go-anywhere, go-with-anything piece. I can see it over a little black dress, set off with a string of pearls. Or then again, topping a pair of jeans on market day.
Seeing Mary's version has made me re-think the original At the Market.

It had been designed specifically for a gradually varying handpainted yarn, one that incorporates a few colours. Not too harshly contrasting, just a subtle variation. The construction on the bias allows the colours to play pleasingly accross the surface of the fabric.
But seeing it now in a solid colour makes me realize how beautiful this would be knitted up in a solid colour like Pixie:

I may just have to make myself another one.
