Waves of Lace

Waves of Lace is a two-piece outfit--a lacy shell with matching scarf. They can be worn together or separately.
The design is an extended version of the Crest of the Wave pattern. This stitch pattern is another variation of the popular Feather and Fan Stitch, in which the knit-two-togethers and the yarn overs occur in groups, separated from each other, causing an undulating, wave-like structure throughout the work.

The lower border begins with fewer repeats of the Crest of the Wave pattern, interrupted by a few rows of Garter Stitch. The repeats become wider, until they continue only in the Crest of the Wave pattern without interruption.
This creates a openwork structure, perfect for those hot days when you only want a light top.
Both back and front are constructed in the same way, ending with a wide crew neckline. The armholes and neckline are worked in Garter Stitch and are knit at the same time as the main piece, so that everything is self-finishing.
A three-needle bind-off joins the front to the back and then, after careful blocking, all that is left to do is to sew the side seams.
The scarf is worked as a separate piece. Again it is worked in the Crest of the Wave Stitch, as for the shell, and in the same sequence. It is worked in one piece, beginning at one end and knitting to the other. No grafting, no provisional cast-ons, no finishing except to weave in the ends and BLOCK.
If you feel so inclined, you could sew the scarf to the shell in such a way that it remains permanently attached and a major design feature of the whole garment.
Some people have mentioned that they particularly like the scarf in this design. If you want, you could simply increase the pattern stitch repeats across the width and create a lovely summer stole for yourself.
Either way, you'll be ready for the beach!
