Earth Maiden in Kauni
This version of Earth Maiden uses the original, signature colourway of Kauni Effekt yarn.
The bright, jewl tones of the full colour spectrum of Kauni EQ have caused me to name this colourway "Spectrum".
I sent it off to "Knitting Karen" (Karen Ireland) in Kitchener, Ontario, who worked up the Earth Maiden pattern for me in this striking colourway. I was keeping my fingers crossed, not exactly sure if I would like this much colour in such a large piece. But Karen assured me, as she was working, that the colours were fantastic. And when I received the finished shawl, I was thrilled with the result.
This piece is a show stopper. Not for the timid, these wide, brilliant, swathes of audacious colour.
I am usually drawn to neutral colours for myself and tend to stay away from strong, primary colours. But against my navy blue wool jacket, this shawl looks stunning. I know I'll get comments, when I wear it. It's impossible not to notice it. But the colours are so joyous, I just have to put it on.
Needless to say, Earth Maiden would look wonderful worked in any of the other Kauni colours as well. It is particularly suited to the Kauni yarn, because this shawl is worked from the bottom up, along the long edge. This allows the long colour repeats, that are the major characteristic of this yarn, full play. Each colour change has a chance to sing its note, without taking over.
And the lace pattern coordinates well with the graduated transitions from colour to colour, giving them a gentle wavy look.
The Earth Maiden kit in Kauni is available for $49.00 CAD (yarn and pattern included). You can order it directly from my website here .
Or go directly to the Kauni Yarn page if you just want to order the yarn.
After all the greys and white of winter, aren't we ready for some colour?
