Agnes Martin, Artist

I am completely intrigued by Canadian-born artist Agnes Martin these days. Have been looking at some of her austere, but still highly emotional work.

A profound introvert, she possesses a Zen-like quietness. Her work is characterized by simple lines, often repeated across the surface of the paper or canvas, in a grid-like fashion. Soft neutral colours or often no colour at all.

Or simple repeats of round points, the tops of nails, making a pattern in rows and columns:

There is also a tactile quality about her paintings and drawings, as though they could be woven or quilted fabrics. One is drawn to approach her work, even touch it. Easy to see how her vision could be translated into fibre.

“Artists are intuitive. They wait for inspiration. That’s what art is about, the intuitive, not the intellectual. Art about ideas stimulates ideas, but art that comes from inspiration stimulates feelings of happiness, innocence and beauty.” -Agnes Martin
